Make certain that you see the 9600 baud icon when you transmit. It is
possible to set the VFOs to different rates.
Also, the FT-847 requires a _much_ higher drive level on 9600 baud than 1200
baud. Not all TNCs can do that without modification.
Setting deviation is much harder, and really requires deviation meter.
Suggest you start low, and work your way up.

<I am using ft-847sat mode...paccomm nb96 tnc [type2]...and wisp.
<I can rx 9600 downlink ok but cannot connect on the 145.840 uplink.
<ptt works ok. I listen with ht on 145.840 and hear white noise when tx
<i assume that 9600baud set#23 auto transfers to sub band on tx??
<so any thoughts??
