  Sure! Positive longitude values are in the Eastern Hemisphere and
negative
values are in the Western Hemisphere! You can also make Florida (83°W)
a
longitude of 277° (E) and come out with the same as -83°

  I think maybe you should just use the North/South and East/West
suffixes. 
When I tried it with a - sign it didn't work at all.
